You can spread the word and champion the cause. Whether you are speaking out to improve education, earnings, or essentials, promoting United Way in your community, reaching out to your elected officials, or wearing your LIVE UNITED shirt to show support, you can help inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow.
United Way works with 25 certified member agencies and other partners to ensure that local residents have the building blocks for opportunity:
- Education for life and career
- Earnings that allow people of all ages and abilities to be self-sufficient, and
- Essentials, like access to food, housing, health care, and emergency services
We selected these issues based on information about the issues facing you and your neighbors, and an understanding of how we can best make significant, sustained improvements in people’s lives and in our community.
Why focus on Education, Earnings, and Essentials?
Education is the cornerstone of individual and community success.
But with more than 1.2 million children dropping out nationally each year, America faces an education crisis. The cost? More than $312 billion in lost wages, taxes and productivity over their lifetimes. These trends are reversible, but only when communities and public, private and nonprofit sectors work together.
We can’t focus on high school alone. High school dropouts are 18 years in the making. United Way's model focuses on supportive communities, effective schools and strong families — strategies and approaches rooted in research.
Earnings stability is tenuous for a growing number of people in our community.
As many as one-third of working Americans do not earn enough money to meet their basic needs. Wages have not kept pace with the rising cost of housing, healthcare, and education and currently, 40 million Americans are working in low-paying jobs without basic health and retirement benefits.
For families walking a financial tightrope, unable to save for college, a home, or retirement, United Way is here to help. Our goal is to cut the number of lower-income families who are financially unstable.
With your help, we believe we can help working families get on the road to economic independence through initiatives that help families meet their basic needs, while gaining the financial capability to plan for, and accomplish, their long-term financial goals.
Essentials are simply that... those factors that everyone needs in their life to have the opportunity for success.
United Way works for a healthier America. Whether it is a neighbor without health insurance, a victim of abuse, or someone struggling with mental illness or an addiction, United Way is working to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food, stable housing, crisis services, and affordable quality health care.
Indiana continues to score low on most measures of health, beginning with childhood obesity. Nationally, more than 33% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese. That’s 25 million kids and teenagers.
Adults are facing their own issues - the number of Americans without health insurance has increased steadily since the beginning of the century, now totaling about 47 million. More than 80% are working families. Achieving a healthier community requires us all to become more aware of health risks and the potential effects they have on ourselves and others, starting from before birth.
