Make the most of tax season!

Free Community Tax Service helps community members like Kara make the most of tax season

"I really like the service and all the people there," Kara, a returning Free Community Tax Service client, said. "They are personable and know the community. They make taxes easy.”

“I’ve used the service for seven years because of the convenience, and I felt like they did a really good job," she said. "I tried it myself and screwed it up. I feel confident in the Free Community Tax Service.”

Taxes can easily become overwhelming, but the Free Community Tax Service makes it easy to get your maximum refund. Trained and certified volunteers help clients file federal and Indiana state taxes for free and claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), if eligible.

As a tip to new clients, Kara said be sure to keep all your tax records and resources together.

"They give you a nice envelope with everything in it," she said, "so keep those records and use the tools they give you."

When not at work, Kara enjoys spending time with family, being outdoors, and watching movies.

Last year the service helped local residents file 2,317 federal returns, saving clients as much as $1.1 million in tax preparation fees and bringing back more than $2.7 million in refunds and credits. Kara received a refund last year that she was able to put in her savings.

12 Free Community Tax Service sites are located throughout Monroe, Owen, and Brown counties, including sites for international students, non-resident taxpayers, and Spanish speaking taxpayers. Hours vary by location.
