$68,522 in Emergency Food and Shelter Program Funding

Monroe, Greene, and Owen counties to receive $68,522 in Emergency Food and Shelter Program Phase 41 Funding

January 22, 2024 -- The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) Local Board has been notified that Greene, Monroe, and Owen counties will receive $68,522 in Phase 41 EFSP funds. 

  • Greene County's funding is $11,427,
  • Monroe County’s funding is $49,686, and
  • Owen County's funding is $7,409.

These funds will be distributed to local agencies that have served those at risk for hunger and homelessness through food programs, shelters, and assistance with rent, mortgage, and utility costs, during the period of 10/01/2022-12/31/2024.

These federal funds were appropriated by Congress and are made available through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.

A Local Board made up of representatives from the City of Bloomington, United Way of South Central Indiana, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, the Bloomington Jewish Community, Catholic Charities, IU Health Bloomington, South Central Community Action Program, the Monroe County Commissioners, the Greene County Foundation, and Owen County Court services, will determine how funds awarded to Greene, Monroe, and Owen County will be distributed among local emergency food and shelter programs.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local organizations chosen to receive funds must:

  1. be private voluntary non-profits or units of government;
  2. have an accounting system;
  3. practice nondiscrimination;
  4. have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs;
  5. have a voluntary board of directors if a private non-profit organization; and
  6. be eligible to receive federal funds.

Organizations interested in applying for funds through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program must contact United Way of South Central Indiana at 431 S. College Ave. or (812) 334-8370, or email info@monroeunitedway.org for an application. The deadline for applications to be received is 12 pm (noon) on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
