Serving Monroe, Owen, and Greene Counties

United Way of Monroe County is proud to announce that New Hope Family Shelter has been certified as a member agency. New Hope will join the network of 24 other local human service nonprofit agencies that work closely with United Way to achieve strategic community goals. Additionally, all existing partner agencies applying for re-certification this year have been approved for continued membership.

New Hope Family Shelter provides temporary shelter for homeless families in Bloomington and Monroe County and, in collaboration with other agencies, helps those families regain housing by addressing the issues that led to homelessness.

According to Barry Lessow, United Way Executive Director, “The United Way board greatly appreciates the work that New Hope Family Shelter has done to provide local families with safe temporary housing and help them rebuild their economic footing. We were particularly impressed by the way New Hope aligns with our goals that everyone should have a safe place to live and that everyone should be financially stable. New Hope’s outcomes show they have been successful in helping families stabilize, attain self-sufficiency, and move back into their own homes.”

Elaine Gunn, New Hope Executive Director, said, “We are elated to become part of the United Way family. This is an exciting partnership that will certainly create opportunities for the families and children we serve. We look forward to working with United Way and its partnering agencies.”

A team of community volunteers and agency professionals developed the United Way membership standards to assure donors that agencies meet certain "best practices" related to their governance, effectiveness, operations, finance, and efficiency. Certified partner agencies receive grants from United Way to help address clients' immediate needs and to make long-term improvements in people's lives.
