Filing taxes can leave even the most confident taxpayers second guessing everything they thought they knew about IRS forms. While some may find filing taxes a breeze, many people muddle through tax season hoping for the best. Thousands of local families that need refunds to make ends meet may be stretching their budgets too thin to pay for tax preparation fees or they may miss out on income boosting opportunities like the Earned Income Tax Credit.
The Free Community Tax Service, led by United Way, removes those barriers by providing low- to moderate-income families with free tax preparation assistance. To qualify, families must make under $54,000 annually (or $64,000 using MyFreeTaxes.org). Sites begin opening on February 1st, but you can schedule an appointment today.
Last year, Free Community Tax Service volunteers helped file 3,030 state and federal tax returns and saved residents of Monroe and Owen county as much as $925,000 in tax preparation fees. Keeping those funds in the pockets of needy families can make a big difference.
