Serving Monroe, Owen, and Greene Counties

Literacy

2019 Day of Action

Faces were aglow with excitement as young learners opened their new literacy backpacks. Thanks to the work of nearly 30 volunteers and generous sponsors, 600 children throughout Monroe County received a backpack as part of the United Way Day of Action on Friday, October 11.

Literacy backpacks were filled with age-appropriate interactive tools for kids in pre-K through sixth grade and an encouraging handwritten card.

Feel passionate about helping children this holiday season? Now you can put that passion “into words” and help United Way support children’s literacy in Monroe, Owen, and Greene Counties this year on Giving Tuesday, December 3.

United Way staff and board members are joining hands to give back to the community through our Giving Tuesday Make a Gift, Give a Book Fundraiser.

Let's Read!

Just as children develop language skills long before they are able to speak, they also develop literacy skills long before they are able to read. Let's Read is an exciting program that partners United Way, Monroe Smart Start, WTIU, and Riley Physicians at IU Health.
