2019 Day of Action

Faces were aglow with excitement as young learners opened their new literacy backpacks. Thanks to the work of nearly 30 volunteers and generous sponsors, 600 children throughout Monroe County received a backpack as part of the United Way Day of Action on Friday, October 11.

Literacy backpacks were filled with age-appropriate interactive tools for kids in pre-K through sixth grade and an encouraging handwritten card.

Real Men Read Launches at R-BB Schools!

Volunteer mentors will visit Richland Bean Blossom Schools' kindergarten classrooms the next two years to inspire a love of reading.

The Real Men Read program brings local "MENtors" into classrooms to read to students once a month for five months during the school year. Kindergarteners receive a book during each visit to build their own home libraries and share with their parents. The MENtors will reach an estimated 240 children each year.

Growing Healthier Youth

School Garden Project

When you think about Bloomington, “deserts” may be the last thing that comes to mind. But in reality, Monroe County does have deserts -- food deserts. Food deserts are areas that prevent the easy food choice from being a healthy food choice. Often times in food deserts, unhealthy options are more easily available and less expensive than traveling to the nearest grocery store or farm market stand.

Global Youth Service Day Makes Local Impact!

What does Global Youth Service Day mean to our community? Rebuilding bikes, installing walking paths, mentoring young students, preparing community gardens, painting murals, planting flowers, assembling racks, and removing invasive plants are just a smattering of the projects taken on by local youth April 11th during the third annual Global Youth Service Day (GYSD). Youth from more than 100 nations participated in GYSD, making it the largest service event in the world..
