Be A Tax Hero

The Free Community Tax Service, led by United Way of Monroe County, is currently seeking volunteers for the 2016 tax season. Individuals can serve at their preference of program sites in Bloomington, Ellettsville, or Spencer.

Free Community Tax Service Increases Filings by 13%

June 22, 2015 -- United Way of Monroe County and the Financial Stability Alliance for South Central Indiana helped area residents file a record number of tax returns this spring. The Free Community Tax Service brought together community partners, including both Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and AARP Tax Counseling for the Elderly (AARP/TCE) programs, and nearly 200 volunteers to assist in filing 3,553 federal returns and over 2,000 state returns for residents in Monroe and Owen counties.

Feb. 2, 2015 -- “Fast! Free! Certified!” These simple words welcomed community members at events that raised awareness of the Free Community Tax Service during Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day on Friday, January 30th.

Free Community Tax Service Set to Launch

United Way of Monroe County and the Financial Stability Alliance for South Central Indiana will launch this year’s Free Community Tax Service season with five outreach events in Monroe and Owen counties. These events join national efforts to raise awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and local free tax assistance.

Free Community Tax Service Volunteer Hub

The Free Community Tax Service helps residents file federal and state returns for no charge, claim the Earned Income Tax Credit, if eligible, and receive 100 percent of their refund quickly and easily, typically in ten days or less.

2014 Fall Money Smart Week Schedule Announced

A week filled with free events to build the financial smarts of Monroe & Owen County community members is just around the corner. Money Smart Week, sponsored by the Financial Stability Alliance for South Central Indiana, in partnership with United Way of Monroe County and the Monroe County Public Library, will take place from Monday, October 20 - Saturday, October 25.

Over 40 young professionals are well on their way to building a successful financial future after attending "Manage Your Money like a Millionaire"! This workshop was organized by United Way and hYPe (Helping Young Professionals Excel), a program of the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, to provide access to tax resources and local, financial professionals. Many of the participants took advantage of this opportunity and filed their taxes for free with MyFreeTaxes.

Live United Spotlight: Meet Mary Boucherle

Mary Boucherle knows taxes like the back of her hand. She began working for the Internal Revenue Service by answering calls on the toll-free number. Twenty-three years later, she retired from her position as a Tax Analyst advising 97 Taxpayer Assistance Centers. During her time with the IRS, Mary developed a wealth of tax knowledge. Today, we're lucky she shares that knowledge with volunteers, partners, and clients through United Way's Free Community Tax Service.

A gift of $2 per week provides 70 bags of healthy groceries to low-income families.

Of the high school seniors enrolled in mentoring programs at United Way member agencies, 94% graduated and 91 % have plans to attend college or vocational school

$60/week can provide materials for 3 volunteer-built handicap-accessible ramps allowing low-income seniors to live at home safely.

Nearly 24,000 rides on Rural Transit and bus passes have been provided so people without transportation could get to and from work

Born Learning materials are free and help parents, caregivers, and our community create early learning opportunities for young children.

Calls made to 2-1-1 are free and confidential.

In 2017, 2-1-1 specialists and online database searches responded to 3,752 inquiries from Monroe, Owen, and Greene counties and made 5,138 referrals. Most callers were seeking help with housing and utilities assistance, and food.

Legacy Donors include United Way in their estate plans, including a will, a retirement plan, or a life insurance policy.

A gift of $9 per week ensures 3 days of emergency shelter service for victims of domestic violence.

88% of Amethyst House clients reported maintaining or increasing income and 100% learned new budgeting skills. 88% of residents in transitional housing programs increased or maintained their income.

Your donation of $1 per week provides 2 people with bus transportation to a new job for a month.

838 school children received supports like clothing, shoes, school supplies, medical services, and special transportation assistance through the MCCSC and RBBSC Assistance Funds so they could fully participate in classes

A gift of $10 per week provides 3 community events to educate low-income community members about legal rights.

A gift of $20 per week can provide 50 people with their birth certificates which will help them in securing housing, employment, and other necessary resources.

A gift of $3 per week provides 12 people with needed prescription medicine.

With 17 regional partners, the Free Community Tax Service helped low-income people in Monroe and Owen counties bring back over $2.9 million in refunds and credits
