- Partnership Between United Way
and Organized Labor
- Since 1946, the AFL-CIO and United
Way of America have enjoyed a cooperative relationship through which
they and local United Ways have provided services to members of
organized labor, their families, and their communities. This
partnership has positively impacted hundreds of local families.
Liz Feitl, our Community Service Liaison, works to...
- Train union members to assist
co-workers with information about available local services and to
refer them to the appropriate organizations. Provide daily
information and referral to those who don't know where to turn;
assist workers who become displaced; recruit members to serve on
local boards of health and human care service organizations; and
work collaboratively with other service organizations to provide
programs to the community.
- Assist the National Association of
Letter Carriers (NALC) in their one-day nationwide food drives. In
addition, letter carriers help elderly and disabled citizens
maintain independent lives through the Carrier Alert Program, which
instructs letter carriers to watch for signs, such as mail
accumulation, that an elderly person may be in crisis.
- Recruit, train, and help place
members of organized labor on the decision-making bodies of health
and human-care organizations.
- Solicit annual letters of
endorsement from AFL-CIO affiliated unions and state federations to
be distributed to United Ways and the entire AFL-CIO Community.
- Support the United Way campaign
through the liaison network.
- Organize and host the annual WRCLC yard sale to benefit UWCS and its member agencies.
