Growing a Love for Reading

"They're totally awesome." "I read 'Corduroy' yesterday, and my brother read a little bit of it." Kindergarteners are clearly excited to be taking part in United Way’s Real Men Read program.

Once a month, male volunteers read to kindergarteners in their classrooms, and each child is provided with a copy of the book to take home. These 18 volunteers, called “MENtors,” show students that reading is important to everyone.

Real Men Read Launches at R-BB Schools!

Volunteer mentors will visit Richland Bean Blossom Schools' kindergarten classrooms the next two years to inspire a love of reading.

The Real Men Read program brings local "MENtors" into classrooms to read to students once a month for five months during the school year. Kindergarteners receive a book during each visit to build their own home libraries and share with their parents. The MENtors will reach an estimated 240 children each year.

Real Men Read a Success!

Spencer Owen Community Schools and United Way of Monroe County wrapped up the first year of Real Men Read in early February with great success! Real Men Read MENtors have been visiting the eight kindergarten classrooms once a month, boxes of books in tow, to share their own love of reading.
