Why?

Our county’s housing costs are among the highest in the state while our median income is among the lowest.

Homeward Bound is a statewide fundraising walk sponsored locally by area social service providers. Funds raised by this annual event stay in Bloomington to help people experiencing homelessness with shelter, food and other emergency assistance needs.

According to the Homeward Bound organizers:

  • 26% of Monroe County residents are experiencing poverty

  • There was 6.9% growth in the number of Monroe County residents in poverty from 2006 to 2007

  • There are 151 children considered homeless in the Monroe County Community School Corporation

  • It takes 89 hours of work at minimum wage to afford one the federal definition of affordable housing.
