Be More Awards recognize over 100 volunteers
On April 21, 2009, more than 500 people packed the Buskirk-Chumley theater to honor the volunteers that assist in every aspect of Monroe County life.  Over 100 were nominated for awards, and nine were recognized for their achievements.

According to United Way Executive Director Barry Lessow, "The Be More Awards event is one way we can thank all the community members who Live United by volunteering to assist individuals and agencies in our area.  We were thrilled to be involved in this evening and congratulate all those nominated."

For more information about the event, including a slide show illustrating the impact of volunteers, a complete list of nominees and those recognized, and slides of the event, visit http://bloomington.in.gov/bemore. The event, hosted by the City of Bloomington Volunteer Network, was co-sponsored for the first time by United Way of Monroe County, WTIU Public Television and the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County.  This is also the first year for the term "Be More Awards", a registered trademark of the Public Broadcasting Service.

An independent panel of judges selected those recognized. Panelists included Jennifer Hottell, United Way's Communication Director; Phil Meyer, WTIU Station Manager; Renee Chambers of the Community Foundation; and retired judge Viola Taliaferro.

The planning team for the event included Bet Savich and Lucy Schaich of BVN; Phil Meyer of WTIU; Shari Woodbury and Renee Chambers of the Community Foundation; and Lori Garraghty, Jenn Hottell, and Barry Lessow of United Way.
